Won 3 Oscars for Best Supporting Actor: COME AND GET IT (1936), KENTUCKY (1938), THE WESTERNER (1940). He was also nominated for SERGEANT YORK (1941).

Memorable as one of the applejack-drinking home intruders in W. C. Fields' MAN ON THE FLYING TRAPEZE (1935). On television he starred in THE REAL McCOYS (1957 - 1963) and THE GUNS OF WILL SONNETT (1967 - 1969).
