His father was Josef Sitka (b. in Poland; occupation: coal miner). He grew up in a Catholic convent and briefly studied for the priesthood; his first stage parts were in the convent's annual Passion Play.

Emil married (1) Sunshine Donna Driscoll (div.), (2) Edith Weber; children (all by 1st marriage) were Eelonka, Ruddigore, Tao, Darrow, Saxon, Storm, Littlestar.

He is buried at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, Camarillo, CA. His gravestone is inscribed "Hold Hands You Lovebirds."
