Struck and killed by a car; at the time of his death, he worked at Bud Abbott's Back Stage Cafe.

When Ted Healy & His Stooges quit rehearsals of the Shubert Brothers' Broadway revue THE PASSING SHOW OF 1932 on Aug. 16, 1932, Allen was tapped to replace Healy as the show's MC. The show's preview tour opened to poor reviews in Detroit on Sept. 4, Lester was replaced by Jack Osterman, and the show finally closed in Cincinnati by the end of September.
