In Heaven, Shemp is informed by his Uncle Mortimer that he can't get in unless he reforms Moe & Larry, who plan to use the money Shemp left them to sell a phony fountain pen invention. (It writes under whipped cream). After haunting the two and foiling their plan, Shemp awakes and realizes it was all a dream, and he set his bed on fire with a cigarette.

    When Shemp says "Gee whiz!" after getting sprayed by the rain cloud, his mouth doesn't move.

    When the cloud spurts water on Shemp, the hole where the water emerges can clearly be seen.

  • On-the-Set Injury
    In the shot where the pen gets stuck in Larry's forehead, the pen ended up really puncturing Larry's skin and drew blood when the pen was removed. After the cameras stopped filming, Moe chased director Jules White around the set because he promised that Larry wouldn't get hurt doing the stunt!

I kind of prefer the remake, which kind of fills in a few holes, but this is still a very enjoyable short. Although the concept of Shemp dying untimely is kind of depressing in light of what would happen in real life not too long afterwards, I love seeing him play the role of a do-good spirit and getting back at Moe. One of the better experimental shorts.
In regard to the on-the-set injury, Larry said in a couple interviews in the early 70's that he gave the director some choice words. He felt awful about it when he realized there was a group of kids on a class field trip visiting the studio.

It's amazing how far $140 could go, even in the late 40s; Moe & Larry bought a new apartment, hired a butler & still had change leftover to buy new suits.

Although seeing Moe & Larry "mourning" Shemp is a bit disturbing in light of what happened later in real life, it's a lot of fun watching what Shemp pulls on the others in this short. I like this better than the remake because it has Sam McDaniel, who has some of the best lines ("Who am I gesundheitin'?"). The idea of a pen that writes under whipped cream makes no sense, but maybe that's our first clue that this is a dream.

I had a funny idea I'd like to bounce off you guys. When Shemp passed away in 1955, and was replaced by Besser, I think a far better replacement would have been Dudley Dickerson. In this short, observe Moe and Larry's interaction with their butler, and picture Dudley instead of Sam McDaniel. It would have been great. Dudley was SO funny that he could have held his own with Moe and Larry for sure. If Our Gang and The East Side Kids had African American members, why not The Stooges? Most of the Stooge stock players were straight actors playing straight parts. Emil Sitka and Dudley were comics in their own rights, so they would have fit the best as actual members of the team. What do you think?

This is one of my favorite Stooges two-reelers, regardless of which 3rd Stooge. It's in my top 25 all-time and top ten Shemp episodes. According to The Three Stooges Scrapbook, there's a scene deleted by the insane censors of Hollyweird, the jerks at the Hays Office. It has Moe as Moses with a type of tablets in his hand pointing out one of the commandments to the newly winged Shemp. Fortunately there's a picture of the deleted scene. I wonder if the deleted scene still exists so that it could be restored to the short for DVD release. In fact there should be a collector's edition of deleted and alternate scenes DVD collections including bloopers....

I have seen home film by Moe's daughter, good stuff. Some show the non-acting Horowitz brothers doing Stooges antics. One of the brothers who was a real estate agent never changed his surname to Howard. Curiously Charles Bronson's folks were from the same city in Luthiania as the Horowitz.....

A departure from a regular stooges short, but this one does pretty well in comparison to most of the other experimental shorts. Sam McDaniel does a pretty good job playing the frightened butler. Not one of my favorites, but still pretty good, and if you can, check out "Bedlam In Paradise" because its a little better, especially since Phil Van Zandt does a good job playing the devil in the remake. 3 pokesEdited by - Mike Holme on 10/1/2001 1:21:32 AM

This is one short that is excellent itself, but the remake ("Bedlam in Paradise") was better. Watching "Daze", I miss seeing Hellen Blazes and her master, Phil Vanzandt as the Devil. I also miss seeing how Shemp died."Daze" was excellent, all the Stooges are excellent and all the supporting players were excellent. My question to all of you is, why compare Sam (the butler [Sappington]) with Dudley Dickerson? Was it just because they were both black men? I do agree though, Dickerson was a funnier actor. Nobody could yell in terror like him.ISLIPP- when the mixer sprays whipped cream. ©2001

A very good and creative short. We get to see Shemp as the star and in somewhat of a different role, and he does a good job. Moe and Larry are great as usual, too. Sam McDaniel as the butler has some funny scenes and liners.

The Stooges go for a short with a twist ending, and it works! Shemp is great here as the ghostly do-gooder, and Larry and Moe play well off eachother as well as Shemp's otherworldy abuse. My only complaint? The element of surprise quickly fades once you know the gimmick. Three and a half pokes.

I'm first and foremost a Curly man, but funny is funny and HEAVENLY DAZE is a first-class job. Shemp Fever...catch it!

A classic! What a great comical and almost freaky visual it is when Shemp spooks the butler as the 'Coat & Hat' creature. That's one of the things about the stooges I've always loved(especially Shemp). Their unique, sometimes strange and always funny 'BODY LANGUAGE'. Wheather it's the way they chew the gum cake and nod to each other as if they like it in 'ALL GUMMED UP' or the way Shemp(w/fake beard & cane) very slowwwly walks away from the Terry Hargen crook in 'RIP,SEW AND STITCH'. Just two examples out of a thousand that kill me every time! I couldn't imagaine any of these lame & spoiled young actors of today, even coming close to pulling off what The Stooges did with such ease!
