I'm shocked, gang! No one mentioned what a great job of singing Christine did! Her great looks, plus the soft spot I have in my heart for old western type songs combined just mesmerize me! Although- I wish Christine didn't have her hair tied up so dang often. Now the short itself is great- I also fully agree with metaldams on this. Unlike Stooge, I can stand Westerns, but I'm not really wholeheartedly into them either. The Stooges being in this short makes it far superior to non-Stooge westerns. ISLIPP you an ickey-may! ®2001

One of the most violent Shemp shorts - Moe with the hacksaw - across the neck and on the ear. When they try to break Larry out of jail it's hillarious - they show a shot or two of Christine singing, then of the cavalry riding about 80 miles a minute, and then the stooges pounding away on the bars. The bit where Moe saws Shemp across the neck is funny - you see a black mark and wonder is it blood or the teeth of the saw - ground away to filings?

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one. I think OUT WEST is an underrated classic. It's one of my favorite Stooge shorts, actually. Shemp's smooth as silk bit is a riot! I think the story flows nicely, Christine McIntyre does an excellent job portraying Nell, the Stooges are in top form, and let's not forget the breaking Larry out of jail scene.

Well, after seeing this one, I'm going to have to break my own rule about saving the four pokes only for Curly shorts! This one was absolutely hilarious with just the right touch of silly melodrama! Jacques O'Mahoney is the perfect straight man for the stooges with his deadpan expressions and mannerisms. BTW, wasn't he the same one who played the hero in "Squareheads of the Round Table"? And is is it just my imagination or did the overall plot of this short have a lot in common with "Squareheads of the Round Table"? Anyway, excellent, hilarious, superb! As good as a Stooge short gets without Curly in it!

OK, I'm warming up to Shemp but -like the early Curly shorts - the first few Shemps aren't quite there yet. (At this time, remember, Shemp was supposedly 'temping' till Curly recovered, which might have something to do with it.) Also, Westerns no longer dominate American entertainment like they once did, so the spoofing of genre cliches doesn't have the same impact anymore....although this short is pretty lame and probably wasn't a fan favorite back then, either.

The western episodes weren't extremely funny to me, just moderately. But some of the things Shemp says are funny, but I think this one should have had a longer chase scene. But the card playing scene is a classic.
