The "December bride" is Lily Ruskin, an attractive widow popular among fellow senior citizens, living with her daughter and son-in-law. The sitcom plots revolve around Lily's involvement in community affairs, and her family's and friends' lives.

Writing a story on skid row for the local newspaper, Lily and her friend Hilda plan to go undercover at a soup kitchen to hear the inside story from a couple bums (Joe Besser, Percy Helton). Keeping this a secret, her family mistakenly comes to the conclusion that Lily is playing the horses. But the secret goes public when a reporter shows up at the soup kitchen with television cameras.
