While Los Angeles police hunt for a serial killer who leaves dismembered women in the Hollywood Hills, a strange transient arrives on the doorstep of Katharine Packard (Miriam Hopkins), a retired star of Hollywood's golden age. Miss Packard broke her leg in an alcoholic haze, and her business manager Leslie (Gale Sondergaard) hires the stranger, Vic Valance, as a nurse and personal assistant. He soon ingratiates himself with the aging actress, and Leslie's suspicions rise when she sees Katharine falling for the young man. Her suspicions are not without merit, and the women find themselves under the influence of the serial killer.
Joe Besser has a small role as a Hollywood tour bus driver.

Filmed on location in the Norma Talmadge Estate mansion.
Minta Durfee (Fatty Arbuckle's one-time wife and costar) has a cameo as a dinner party guest.
Florence Lake, costar of Edgar Kennedy's 1930s-1940s short subjects at RKO, appears as Katharine's maid.
