The Stooges try to get jobs with Scotland Yard after graduating from a correspondence detective school. They wind up as "Yard Men" all right - picking up trash and pruning the hedges. But they get their chance when they find a note calling for three detectives to go to Glenheather Castle in Scotland to solve a mystery.

Remade as SCOTCHED IN SCOTLAND (1954), with stock footage.

A transcription of an unfilmed sequence, an alternate ending found in Jules White's files, is presented in The Three Stooges Journal # 128 (Winter 2008).

I don't have much new to add to the other reviews here--overall I enjoyed this one, and consider it one of the better ones from the early Shemp period. I noticed something new though that hasn't aged well: Shemp's dialect joke where Moe says he's from the "South part of Scotland". . .a distinctly "blackface" imitation without the makeup. I know this was normal for the period and all, but still. . .detracts from enjoyment today.

It's a shame that the fright takes slow this short down, because the opening minutes, the yard cleaning scenes, & the boys being interviewed by the Earl are outstanding work. Shemp especially is great popping of a stream of one-liners. Once they leave the Earl's office though, the short lags until the funny fast motion fight scene towards the end.

Where on Earth could I even begin to profess my love for this superior Shemp short? If it's not my favorite, then it's damn near close! Gags run at rapid fire pace, starting with the "two socks" bit all the way to the "you look better with it on" bit. Shemp is great here as always and Larry gets some hilarious screentime by himself as does Moe with his Scottish dance. Excellent in every way. Four pokes!

GREAT EPISODE!!! That whole scene in the earls office is great!! That whole MC thing and Lorna Doone is great. I love the shavin mug, where shemp thinks briefly that the skull is his uncle. It is a great Shemp short, I'd rate very high. Edited by - Moeth on 9/28/2001 11:26:41 PM

This is one of my all time favorite Shemp shorts. I'm sure that you all caught Shemp taking a drag from a cigarette. That was the only time I ever saw a Stooge smoke. I also liked the remake when the Skeleton says, "How ye fixed for blades? Ya better look." LOL!

Great short. This has a great plot with a lot of funny gags and scenes. The Stooges fake scottish accents, and Moe's dancing to the bagpipe music are the funniest parts. I also love the castle set used in this one.

This is one of the funniest during the Shemp era. The boys are at the top of their game with both their physical and verbal interplay. I didn't miss the slacker and the dog at all. Why did they speed up the voices during the scene when they fight the bad guys? As always, Christine looks great and strikes a wonderful balance between angel and devil in her role.

Aye, Stooge. 'tis a rhumba with kilts!Whatta great short- and one of Shemp's very best. Christine is better looking here than in most other Stooge shorts because her hair is all down and she looks cute in the Scottish outfit. I wonder if that sheik costume was the same one used in "Three Arabian Nuts" (I only remember one sheik in that short for sure).ISLIPP-©2001

Good short, but there are a few slow parts like the part in which Moe and Shemp were downstairs. The remake is a little better, but not much. The highlight of this short for me is the "two socks of five" gag.Rating: 87%(B+)Edited by - Mike Holme on 8/28/01 3:46:29 AM

I haven't seen this one in a while, but from what I remember, it's a definate 4-poker. Love the "Lorna Doone" joke (I use it all the time when we encounter Lorna Doone cookies or whatnot.) You're right, Cathy, Shemp leaves himself WIDE open for abuse! That's what makes it so funny. I'm from below the McMason McDixon Line, by the way (McMaryland, that is) :0)

Just watched this yet again and I'm upping my rating to four pokes. The Scottish-castle scenes aren't as good as the opener at Scotland Yard, but how could they be? The first few minutes of HOT SCOTS is as good as it gets, Stooge-wise. Moe punishing Shemp with the garden-shears is excruciating!! I'll take the two socks...
