Leonard Maltin scripted this informative, entertaining documentary, filled with archival footage, on the history of "talkie" short subjects. Based on Maltin's 1972 book The Great Movie Shorts. Popular series such as "Our Gang," "Laurel and Hardy," "Joe McDoakes," "Pete Smith Specialties," Vitaphone musicals, Fitzpatrick travelogues, "Crime Does Not Pay," serials, cartoons, newsreels and more are highlighted.

The Three Stooges are not overlooked, receiving due and respectful discussion of their years at Columbia in a segment titled "Nyuk! Nyuk! Nyuk!" Included are new and archival interview clips with some of the people who worked in short subjects, both in front and in back of the camera, including Adrian 'Lorna Gray' Booth and Sam White. Features clips of the Stooges, with Adrian Booth, Don Beddoe, Vic Travers, Ann Doran and Richard Fiske from THREE SAPPY PEOPLE (1939). Also Ted, Bonnie, Ben Turpin and the boys in a clip from HOLLYWOOD ON PARADE # B-9 (1934), and the Stooges with Howard Morris in STAR SPANGLED SALESMAN (1968). A segment that talks about future stars who made their start in short subjects presents a clip of Jimmy Stewart in ART TROUBLE (1934), a Shemp Howard/Harry Gribbon comedy.
