An ailing eccentric millionaire hires three tree surgeons - guess who - to get a mate for his puckerless persimmon tree, which can only be found on the island of Rhum Boogie. The Stooges wind up on the cannibals' menu when Curly refuses to marry the chieftain's sister.

The "idol with many hands" gag was redone in HULA-LA-LA (1951).

When Curly tells Moe to "Beat me, Daddy, down to the floor," he is paraphrasing the lyrics of a popular song -- "Beat me, Daddy, eight to the bar."

The first half of this one is excellent; Curly's transfusion, the scenes with the old man & Symona Boniface and Mary Ainslee thinking the stooges are cutting off his leg, all top notch stoogery. It slows down a bit when the boys hit the Isle of Rhumboogie, but overall there's not much to complain about. Watch it.

There are small moments in the stooges' shorts that, tho easy to miss, are incomparably hilarious. One of those moments is in this piece! Namely the Boogie-Woogie moment when the boys dance about the coot's living room in rhythm. Curly is wild here, Moe adds to the hilarity by playing his head like a drum and even the millionaire is in the swing, bobbing in time to the action! A super memory! ALSO: that incredible effect when Curly gets a dose of his plant grower and his legs stretch like 9 feet! How did they do that stunt safely and within budget? Top Stooge moment from a howlingly funny short.

I agree that this one is a weak one. Seems that when the focus is moved out of the typical (city) setting the gags suffer. When they get to the island the laughs fall flat and the gags are just plain dumb.

Hey Dunrobin, you made a mistake with the cast credits. The nurse is played by Mary Ainslee and the King's sister is played by Louise Carver. Anyway, very good short with a great evil spirit scene, although I thought it was funnier with Moe in HULA-LA-LA, but still very funny here.Grade: A-

Im not sure why but this short does not do it for me, I mean it started out real good with the stooges as tree doctors, but as soon as they got on the island it just really seemed to drag. Not enough to be a real stinker but it could have been alot better. 2-1/2 pokes. ive had a few to many myself

I'll bet the "Amos & Andy" scene would be deleted in a politically correct society.I hate PC! like others have said, I think its censorship.I never understood the ending where the stooges go underwater. I thought Curly would have been a hero after recovering the stranely named tree(sorry, I can't remember what the name was)."For Duty & Humanity"

This is a classic. I watched it again and it belongs up there with "Three Little Beers" and "An Ache In Every Stake". Larry was ignored in the first half but in the second half he got a lot more attention. The scene in which Curly grows is hilarious and so was the Amos and Andy impressions done by Moe and Larry. You're right! According to the filmography in "The Three Stooges Scrapbook", Lousie Carver plays the nurse, and the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) also says the Mary Ainslee played the king's sister. But when I looked into it further, I realized that Louise Carver played the old bat in "Dizzy Doctors" (Curly offers to rub a little of his Brighto on her "body"), and Mary Ainslee played "Mary" in "Hokus Pocus," so you're absolutely correct. I'll correct the cast list as soon as I get a chance. :-)A poke in the eyes and three bonks on the head for Kingsley. (Oh, a wise guy, eh?) Dunrobin (the Webmaster)

Add me in too, I love this one. It has a strange quality in the first half that I enjoy. Just as SDJ, I like the "I think my toes were in there!" line from Larry. And hey, this one's introed by Dr. Anita Hug on AMC. She's tied to a tree, being tortured.....perfect!

Jeez, and I thought I was a perfectionist! Seems everybody but me has some bone to pick with this short, but I laughed hard throughout the whole thing. The oft-derided second half (on the island with the cannibals) isn't as slow as you might be led to believe. Of course, I pretty much love EVERYTHING the boys did in this 39-43 period: even when the situations are slightly stale, you can always count on great Curly sound effects (HMMMMM!!!), snarling punishment from Moe and there's always AT LEAST one glove save from Larry in nets ("I think my toes were in there!"). Nothing wrong with SAMOA that watching it while nursing a single-malt won't cure. At the very least, it's not another Western spoof!
